Our Curriculum
Since September 2000 all children must be working towards the desirable outcomes of the Foundation Stage. This is divided into 6 Areas of Learning.
1) Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Within our nurturing environment children are encouraged to become independent, confident, secure and able to work and play with their peers.
2) Communication, Language and Literacy
Children are encouraged to extend their communication skills in small and large groups activities.
Story time, role play, music & movement, poetry and rhythm help the children to develop a positive attitude to the early stages of reading, writing and listening to others.
3) Mathematical Development
Children are helped to develop their understanding of numbers and simple mathematical problems by adult led activities such as ensuring every child has a cup and plate at snack time (matching 1 cup and 1 plate to each child).
Puzzles, songs, flashcards, beads and games are some of the other resources used to support and develop children’s mathematical awareness.
4) Knowledge and Understanding of the World
Our pre-school provides a safe and stimulating environment which enables children to develop their understanding of the world around them. Visitors from the community, including the fire service, police and the dentist, have reinforced their understanding of their local surroundings and those who live in it. We also make trips to the local Post Office, Duck Pond, School and Church.
Festivals from around the world including Diwali and the Chinese New Year are incorporated into our Curriculum. These help children to begin to appreciate and learn about different cultures and ways of life as well as beginning to learn about the bigger world they live in.
5) Physical Development
Slides, climbing frames, bikes, trampoline and large soft play shapes are some of the many pieces of equipment available to encourage children to develop confidence in movement and control of their bodies.
Children are encouraged to develop their fine motor skills through a variety ways including threading, beading, scissor and pencil control.
6) Creative Development
Messy play is just part of the fun children at Yatton Keynell Under 5’s enjoy as part of their creative development.
Children are encouraged to express their ideas and use their imagination through art, music, dance, stories and role-play both individually and as a part of a group.
