Newsletter
Summer 2010
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the spring/summer edition of the YKU5’s newsletter, and welcome to all the new families who have joined us recently and who will be joining us after the half-term holiday. We have lots of news of forthcoming events for the children and parents, and hope that you will be able to come along to some, if not all of them.
Parents’ meetings
We will be offering you an opportunity to come into pre-school and talk to your child’s key person regarding their progress. After much discussion, it was decided that a good way to do this would be to invite you to make a 10 minute appointment at a mutually convenient time (at the start or the end of the day) over a two week period, week commencing Monday 21st June. A timetable will be posted shortly on the notice board, so please keep looking, and add your name to a time that suits you. If for any reason you are unable to make a date within this fortnight, please feel free to speak to your key person to arrange an alternative time.Children’s learning and development
The Early Year’s Foundation Stage (EYFS) requires providers to ensure a balance of child-initiated and adult-led play-based activities. In order to establish this balance, after the half-term break we will no longer adopt a weekly ‘theme’, we will plan according to the interests and needs of the children. Please keep your eyes on the notice board for what children will be learning each week.
Small group times are a good example of an adult-led activity, where the adult has selected the time to encourage a particular aspect of learning, or discuss a topic. We will slowly start to introduce these times too.
We will continue to have a letter and colour of the week, so please try to encourage your child to bring in ONE item which either begins with the letter, or is the colour of the week.
Week Beginning | Letter | Colour |
7th June 2010 | N | Green |
14th June 2010 | C/K | Purple |
21st June 2010 | E | Orange |
28th June 2010 | H | Pink |
5th July 2010 | R | Brown |
12th July 2010 | M | Grey |
Dates for your diary:
Tuesday 15th June: Chris Chard the photographerChris Chard will be visiting the pre-school from approx. 8.30am. Parents are welcome to bring siblings to accompany their pre-school children should they wish, for a family
photo. This photography session is available to those who do not normally attend on a Tuesday too, if you would like your child/ren to have their photo taken.
Saturday 19th June: Yatton Keynell Village FeteMore details to follow.
Tuesday 29th June: Barnardo’s Big Toddle – 10.30amWe will be raising money for Barnardo’s and to do this the children will be having a ‘Toddle’ around the playing field. The national theme for this year’s Big Toddle is pirates, so please encourage your child to arrive at pre-school that day in the appropriate attire, or bring it with them in their bag to change into. A sponsor form with details is attached to this newsletter. 25% of all funds raised will be retained by the pre-school and will contribute towards resources for the reading corner, which is an area that we are especially keen to develop. It would be wonderful if as many of you as possible could support this worthwhile cause, all are welcome, even if it is not your ‘normal day’. Should this be the case, then we do request that you do stay to accompany your child.
Wednesday 30th June: YKU5’s Open DayMore details to follow.
Tuesday 6th July: Sports Day – 10.30amWeather permitting, we will be holding this event on the field in front of the village hall. This is for ALL children, so if it is not your child’s scheduled day and they will be coming along, please arrive with them at 10.15am, already dressed in their PE kit (please could ALL children arrive clothed in their PE kit). Parents can then take their seats on the chairs laid out either side of ‘the sports track’. We estimate that this will last approx. 1 hour, and afterwards there will be coffee available for parents and a home-made cake sale on the patio, whilst the children continue with their morning, and have their lunch inside. On the morning at drop-off, we would be very grateful to receive donations of home-made cakes (large and small), biscuits etc. for the sale. The funds will be put towards resources in the reading corner. Would parents’ kindly note that this session will end promptly at 12.30pm due to the regular Toddler Group taking place in the afternoon, and would therefore greatly appreciate your cooperation.
Friday 9th July: Langley Chase Farm in Kington LangleyWe have planned a trip to Langley Chase Farm (second attempt due to cancellation in March because of wet weather!). We will leave pre-school at 9.45am and return at approx. 12 noon for lunch back at pre-school. You will need to provide transport for your child both getting there and coming back. If anyone would like to follow us in their cars you can meet us at pre-school ready to leave at 9.45am. All pre-school children are welcome on this trip, however, if it is not your child’s normal session you will need to accompany them. If it is your child’s normal session they can stay without you, or you are welcome to join us and enjoy the visit. Please let us know if your child will be coming to the farm. There will be no additional charge for this trip.
Tuesday 13th July: End of term partyWe will be holding an end of term party to celebrate the last year at pre-school, and also to say good-bye to many of the children who will be leaving us to go to school. There will be lots of fun and games and party food for lunch. It will be from 10.30 – 12.30 and ALL children are welcome, and as usual, if it is not your child’s regular session, then you will be requested to stay with them. There will be a list put up on the notice board after the half-term break with suggested food items, if you would like to contribute something towards the lunch, then please sign against the food item.
Sunday 10th October: Castle Combe Car Boot SalePlease put this date in your diary as we will be needing volunteers to help with car parking and taking entrance money. This is normally a fantastic fundraiser for the pre-school, and therefore would go a long way to raising funds for new equipment for the children.

End of term reports
If anyone has not already returned their child’s end of term report from April, please could you return it to a member of staff at your earliest convenience.
Emergency contact details
Please ensure that we are currently holding the correct information on file, and confirm this with a member of staff.
Tuesday mornings
Please could you provide a P.E kit (shorts and t-shirt) for your child if they attend on a Tuesday morning. We encourage the children to become more independent in changing into their PE kit, this prepares them for when they go to school.
Sunshine
Now that the warmer weather is fast approaching (we can but hope!), please could you ensure that your child has had sun cream applied before arriving at pre-school, has a named bottle of sun cream in their bag, and a sun hat too. We spend as much time outdoors as we do inside, so these requests serve to protect your child and keep them safe. Please also ensure that any other items are clearly named, i.e. clothing, lunch boxes, drink bottles...
Last, but by no means least!
YKU5’s is run by an elected voluntary committee, and without them, the pre-school would not exist. Some of the existing members are due to leave come September, and therefore new members will be required. If there are any parents out there who would like to know more about what is involved, and are interested in learning more about ‘pre-school life’, then PLEASE PLEASE make yourselves known to us, as we need you, and the children need you too. The pre-school CANNOT OPERATE without a voluntary committee at the helm!
This is an unusually lengthy newsletter I know, but thank you all for taking the time to read it and for your continued support throughout the year,
Sandra, Amy, Tina, Hannah, Sue, Charlotte, Louise and Mary
